He specializes in Banking Law, Capital Markets, Mergers and Acquisitions, and International Arbitration. He has vast experience as an expert consultant for local and multi-national companies regarding highly complex commercial and financial operations.

He is an Attorney at Law. He graduated from Buenos Aires University – UBA (Argentina) in 1978, and from the University of the Republic (Uruguay) in 1979, from where he obtained a degree in Law and Social Science. He also earned a Master´s degree in Corporate Law from the Montevideo Institute of Business Studies.

At present, he is part of the list of appointed arbitrators at the Settlement and Arbitration Center of the Chamber of Commerce. He has been a Non Executive Director of McDonald´s Subsidiary in Uruguay and for 25 years he served as Non Executive Director, Vice-President and President (1991-2017) of Banco Santander in Uruguay.

He lectured at the 1st. Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century: an agenda for Latin America and the United States held at the Harvard Law School in 2008. In 2010 President and member of several arbitration panels, including acting as President in an ICC arbitration. Delivers frequent speeches at the National Chamber of Commerce and Services regarding financial and tax regulations under discussion by the Government of Uruguay.

Experience

Leads profesional teams of the Firm – some of the most representative matters include:

  • 2018 – leading a dispute resolution team which ended in a settlement between two International Banks for over 8.8 Million U$ Dollars.
  • 2017 – led a team that prepared all the terms and conditions of a private bid to sell a property that ended successfully foro ver 4.3 Million U$ Dollars.
  • Member of the Court of Arbitration of the Center for Conciliation in a millionaire international dispute (2016- arbitral award in progress).
  • Appointed as President of the Court of Arbitration in an international dispute between a Brazilian and an Argentinian companies.

Memberships

  • Appointed by the World Council of the International Chamber of Commerce as Member representative of Uruguay to serve at the International Court of Arbitration (ICC), Paris, from July 1st 2015 until June 30th 2018.
  • Re-approinted by the ICC Council as member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration form July 1st 2018 until June 30th, 2021.
